The relevance of the effective stress intensity range to crack growth is considered for constant and for variable amplitude loading. The accelerated and retarded growth associated with simple programmed loadings is reported for two steels and an aluminium alloy. The load interaction effects are due to several competing mechanisms, and not due to the single, popular mechanism of crack closure.

A vast body of experimental data has been accumulated on the constant amplitude crack growth response of structural metals in moist laboratory air. Usually the data is presented as plots of crack growth rate, da/dN, against stress intensity range, DELTA K. In order to extrapolate this data to fatigue crack growth in more active or more inert environments, to crack growth under variable amplitude loading, or to crack growth under multi-axial or mixed mode loading, the mechanisms of crack advance and crack closure should be considered. This paper briefly reviews the crack closure phenomenon and discusses the dominant causes of accelerated and retarded growth under changes in environment or type of loading. It is argued that simple constant amplitude data is often surprisingly accurate when used to predict crack growth in more complex situations. However, there are some cases where constant amplitude data lead to dangerously non-conservative predictions of fatigue life.

We present quantitative analysis of the ultra-high photoconductivity in amorphous oxide semiconductor (AOS) thin film transistors (TFTs), taking into account the sub-gap optical absorption in oxygen deficiency defects. We analyze the basis of photoconductivity in AOSs, explained in terms of the extended electron lifetime due to retarded recombination as a result of hole localization. Also, photoconductive gain in AOS photo-TFTs can be maximized by reducing the transit time associated with short channel lengths, making device scaling favourable for high sensitivity operation. © 2012 IEEE.

One of the most important issues facing the helicopter industry today is helicopter noise, in particular transonic rotor noise. It is the main factor limiting cruise speeds, and there is real demand for efficient and reliable prediction methods which can be used in the rotor design process. This paper considers the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation applied to a permeable control surface. The surface is chosen to be as small as possible, while enclosing both the blade and any transonic flow regions. This allows the problematic quadrupole term to always be neglected, and requires only near field CFD input data. It is therefore less computationally intensive than existing prediction methods, and moreover retains the physical interpretation of the sources in terms of thickness, loading and shock-associated noise. A computer program has been developed which implements the permeable surface form of retarded time formulation. The program has been validated and subsequently used to validate an acoustic 2-D CFD code. It is fast and reliable for subsonic motion, but it is demonstrated that it cannot be used at high subsonic or supersonic speeds. A second computer program implementing a more general formulation has also been developed and is presently being validated. This general formulation can be applied at high subsonic and supersonic speeds, except under one specific condition. © 2002 by the author(s).
